Vatoussa, one of the villages whose traditional identity is protected by the law.
The village was first settled in the 10th century and takes it’s name from the word “Vatoessa”, which means “abounds in bush.” There is much to see in the village, like Gogos Mansion, whose particular placement makes it a dominant structure in the village. The Church of the Archangels, which dates from 1832 and is a three-aisled basilica, and the Central Church of the Dormition of the Virgin, which was built in 1850 of hand hewn stone and is of the same style.
Vatoussa has two squares: The Upper and the Lower Square.
The upper square is a unique sight, due to it being shaded by a remarkable Platanos tree, which actually has a very large fig tree growing out of the middle of it.
The lower square has the remains of a Turkish guest house and two popular restaurants, not only among the people of Vatoussa, but among the nearby villages and travellers.
The citizens of Vatoussa are proud of their heritage and the traditional identity that they respect and preserve. They open their arms and welcome with a smile people who appreciate the tradition and come to visit this trully outstanding village!
